Traditional women leaders drive climate adaptation in northern Ghana

Across Africa, women and girls are leading climate action and strengthening their communities. On the International Day for Women and Girls of African Descent, SIGRA marks the leadership, knowledge and lasting contributions of the traditional women leaders it works with.

In Ghana, Queen Mothers and women leaders are advancing climate adaptation through capacity enhancement initiatives under SIGRA. From restoring community water access and protecting dams to promoting climate-smart agriculture and tree planting, they are turning training in agroecology and climate planning into practical action that strengthens local resilience.

Their leadership reflects a broader reality: women play a critical role in adaptation, and inclusive change is most durable when it is led from within communities.
