Solar-Powered Boreholes Strengthening Water Security in Drought-Prone Communities

In Akatsi North District, SIGRA supported solar-powered borehole systems to improve water access in Atanve, Nyitawuta and Metsrikasa. The intervention responds to prolonged dry seasons, erratic rainfall and drought conditions that reduce water availability and place a heavier burden on women, children and vulnerable households.

Two boreholes were drilled and mechanized with storage tanks in Atanve and Nyitawuta, while an abandoned borehole in Metsrikasa was mechanized and fitted with storage. With the systems now completed, the project is strengthening local water security and providing a more climate-resilient water source for 1,774 residents. Community-level management arrangements are important for sustaining the systems beyond construction.
