Nanumba South District

In Nanumba South District, SIGRA supported solar-powered irrigation systems in Wulensi and Nakpayili to make dry-season vegetable production possible for vulnerable farmers. The intervention responds to erratic rainfall, longer dry seasons and declining agricultural productivity, which affect household food security and women’s livelihood options.

Beneficiaries received inputs, equipment and training in farm and business management. In Wulensi, farmers cultivated two acres of okra and tomatoes, while groups in Nakpayili cultivated three acres. Early harvests and sales had already begun by the end of the reporting period, with communities reporting that irrigation made all-year cultivation possible. The district also adopted Jatropha hedges as a nature-based fencing solution to help protect irrigated plots.
